REPRESENTING CARNIVAL CHAMPIONS NAÇÃO do MARACATU PORTO RICO, from Recife, Brazil

Baque de Axé are a London based band

We were formed by our leader Sam Alexander back in 2002 under the original name of Maracatu Estrela do Norte. The band play Maracatu Carnival percussion music from Recife, Brazil. After Sam had an extended stay in the community of Bode in Recife in 2017 with Nacao do Maracatu Porto Rico, our name was changed to Baque de Axe and we became affliated to Porto Rico in the songs and rhythms we play.

We play in concerts and clubs, parade in street carnivals, teach workshops and perform at private and corporate events. We play “Maracatu de Baque Virado”, which means ‘Maracatu of the turning beat', reflecting the syncopation and interaction of the beats. This traditional form of carnival parading, percussion and dance has deep roots in Afro-Brazilian traditions and is a major form of carnival in Recife, around Brazil, and also around the world.
