Our ‘Agbê for Maracatu’ beginner, intermediate and advanced courses cover technique, rhythms, moves, and the music’s cultural context.

The courses are brought to you by Baque de Axé in collaboration with Naçao de Maracatu Porto Rico’s agbêzeira lead, Jaysse Chacon.


Agbê: Beginners

 

Our ‘Agbê for Maracatu’ beginners course consists of 5 classes (plus a performance!).

You will learn the origins and roots of this ancestral instrument as well as the basic techniques, rhythms and moves for Maracatu - which is a traditional form of carnival percussion, that has deep roots in Afro-Brazilian traditions, and is a major form of carnival in Recife, Brazil.

x4 in-person classes with our Baque de Axé agbêzeiras.

x1 online class with Nação de Maracatu Porto Rico’s agbêzeira lead, Jaysse Chacon. Jaysse will speak in Portuguese with an English translator on the call.

No previous experience required – just bring along great vibes and comfy shoes!

Cost
The course of 5 classes costs £50 in total and includes a free invitation to perform at the Baque de Axé end of year party.

Agbê: Advanced and Notting Hill repertoire

 

Coming in Summer 2025

Our ‘Agbê for Maracatu’ advanced course of 5 classes covers advanced techniques, and will include learning Baque de Axé’s Notting Hill Carnival 2025 repertoire ready for performing at Notting Hill Carnival in August!

x4 classes are taught in person by members of our London based Baque de Axé agbêzeiras.

x1 class will be online with Nação de Maracatu Porto Rico’s agbêzeira lead, Jaysse Chacon. Jaysse will speak in Portuguese with an English translator on the call.

Those interested in joining Baque de Axé in Notting Hill will have access to additional rehearsals (both in person and online)
